Please don't be a biblioclast

A word I came across today, while trying to come up with something to blog about, is biblioclast. Think about the word, and see if you can come up with the meaning.

Got it? It is a destroyer or mutilator of books.

Not just of the Bible, as I first thought, but of books in general. The root biblio- can mean the Bible in specific or books in general (e.g., bibliography). What a terrible thing to be a destroyer of books. Books are wonderful, beautiful things, and shouldn't be harmed purposefully. I understand a book getting the spine cracked by reading, or even dog-earing the pages (although I don't personally dog-ear), because that's being done through love of the written word. But to purposefully destroy a book, whether by burning it, defacing it, shredding it, or whathaveyou, is just terrible. Just the thought of it makes my skin crawl.

As terrible things go, this isn't really up there, but it bothers me A LOT. I guess because I'm much more likely to run into a biblioclast than a murderer or thief or such.
